PennEast Pipeline Inspires Bill to Regulate Federal Agency

Dozens gathered atop Baldpate Mountain preserve in Hopewell Township on Wednesday to endorse U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman’s plan to propose a bill in Congress to revamp pipeline approvals.Watson Coleman said she will introduce the Safe and Accountable Federal Energy Review for Pipelines Act of 2016, or SAFER Pipelines Act. Editorial: Pipeline Debates Need Broader Perspective

A mounting number of pipeline projects threaten to scar lands and damage the environment across New Jersey, and among the most controversial is a proposed 22-mile South Jersey Gas line that would slash through protected Pinelands areas to allow an old power plant to convert from coal to natural gas.

How controversial is the proposal? Three former New Jersey governors have joined together to legally challenge the Board of Public Utilities’ approval of the line in what could very well be an unprecedented maneuver. Read more.
