ReThink Energy NJ Ad Campaign Promotes Renewable Energy, Opposes Unneeded Gas Pipelines

Engaging Radio and Print Ads Urge New Jerseyans to Say “No” to Polluting Pipelines and “Yes” to Clean, Renewable Energy

FAR HILLS, N.J., March 14, 2016 — The fight to stop unneeded pipelines, including PennEast’s proposed natural gas pipeline in New Jersey, has risen to a new level, as ReThink Energy NJ launched a new radio and print advertising campaign across the Garden State urging citizens and decisionmakers to “say no” to unnecessary pipelines and “yes” to renewable energy sources.

The new series of broadcast and print ads encourage residents across New Jersey to reach out to lawmakers and urge them to take action to stop the proliferation of proposed new pipelines that threaten land, water and communities throughout the state. The ads also seek to inform New Jersey residents about the importance of a rapid transition to clean, renewable, locally-produced sources of energy, such as solar and wind.

The print ads, scheduled to appear in media outlets across New Jersey, denounce pipelines as “Wrong for Homeowners, Wrong for the Economy, Wrong for our Land and our Water, Wrong for our Communities and Wrong for Consumers.” The ads speak of the benefits of renewable energy, including creating jobs and healthy communities for our families.

“This compelling new ad campaign asks all New Jerseyans to get involved in stopping unneeded pipelines, like PennEast, from threatening our water, communities and preserved lands,” said Tom Gilbert, campaign director, of ReThink Energy NJ and New Jersey Conservation Foundation. “These pipelines cannot be justified at a time when we need to reduce our use of dirty fuels, like natural gas, and transition to clean, renewable energy.”

Gilbert noted that an analysis released last week by national energy expert, Skipping Stone, concluded that the PennEast pipeline is not needed, would result in increased costs to ratepayers and only profit PennEast’s owners.

According to Jim Waltman, executive director, Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, “There is strong opposition to the PennEast pipeline, which has the potential to cause irreparable harm to over 4,300 acres of taxpayer supported preserved farms, parks and natural areas, threaten drinking water supplies and pose health and safety risks to our communities. This pipeline is not needed and must be stopped.”

“Pipelines are becoming the new sprawl and endangering the preserved land that New Jersey residents fought so hard to protect and support through their tax dollars. The proposed Southern Reliability Link and South Jersey Gas pipelines threaten the Pinelands National Reserve, which is the source of drinking water for much of South Jersey,” said Carleton Montgomery, executive director, Pinelands Preservation Alliance.
