Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project

Act Now to Stop the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Project

Send a letter to Governor Sherrill opposing the NESE pipeline project. There’s still time — the NJ Tidelands Council and State of New Jersey must deny Williams/Transco’s utility license for NESE based on the extent of environmental harm, economic loss, public health risks, and the loss of a public resource.

NESE IS NOT IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST!

WHAT IS IT?: The Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline was first proposed by Williams Transco in 2017. This zombie pipeline project is back and would construct a new compressor station near Trap Rock Quarry in Franklin Township as well as 3.5 new miles of connecting natural gas pipeline through Old Bridge, and 23 miles through the Raritan Bay into New York. It would be capable of carrying nearly 400 million cubic feet of dirty, climate-altering methane gas each day through New Jersey to downstate New York.

UNNEEDED: Both New York and New Jersey environmental protections agencies previously rejected this pipeline stating it was unneeded, a threat to sensitive environmental habitats, and would pollute communities across our region.

EXPENSIVE: Three independent studies have shown that this pipeline is unneeded. New Jersey would suffer the collateral damage to our land, air, water, and health while New York ratepayers would pay for gas they don’t even need.

THREAT TO OUR WATERS: The pipeline would rip through the Raritan Bay and Lower New York Bay, posing a threat to sensitive marine ecosystems. In addition, the pipeline construction process would dredge up thousands of tons of contaminated sediment, threatening clean water that communities across both states rely on. The heavy metals stirred up by dredging would permanently contaminate the Raritan Bay and Jersey Shore.

THREAT TO OUR SAFETY: NESE would run more gas – faster and hotter through aging pipelines – through our communities, underneath our schools, churches, synagogues, shopping centers, and roads, putting us in harm’s way.

THREAT TO OUR AIR: The NESE pipeline would emit tons of new carbon pollution into the air, worsening our air quality and the climate crisis in New Jersey.

THREAT TO OUR HEALTH: The project would yearly spew 1,400 lbs of carcinogenic Hazardous Air Pollutants into the air we breathe – far exceeding NJDEP reporting thresholds. Transco’s NOx and VOC emissions will exacerbate the region’s ozone pollution problem, endangering the health of our communities.

NESE is a dirty methane fossil fuel project that takes in the wrong   direction – away from the clean renewable energy we need!
