Battery Storage Explained: How Clean Energy Stays Available When It’s Needed Most

Posted October 7, 2026

As more electricity comes from renewable sources like solar and wind, one question comes up frequently: What happens when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing?

That’s where battery energy storage comes in.

Battery energy storage systems capture electricity when it’s plentiful and store it for later use. When demand for electricity increases—or renewable energy production temporarily declines—the stored energy can be released back to the grid to help keep electricity flowing reliably.

In addition to supporting renewable energy, batteries can provide a cleaner way to meet periods of peak electricity demand, helping reduce strain on the electric grid, improve reliability during outages and reduce reliance on older, less efficient “peaker” power plants that typically operate when electricity use is highest.
