After years of advocacy, organizing and public pressure, we have a major victory to celebrate in the fight against William Transco’s Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has vacated New Jersey DEP’s Water Quality Certificate for NESE, removing a key approval needed for the proposed fracked gas pipeline to move forward through New Jersey waters.
NESE would carry fracked gas from Pennsylvania through New Jersey to New York, including a new compressor station in Franklin Township and pipeline infrastructure beneath the Raritan Bay. ReThink Energy NJ has strongly opposed this unnecessary expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure alongside advocates and communities across the region.
We are incredibly grateful to Eastern Environmental Law Center and NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), NY/NJ Baykeeper, Princeton Manor Homeowners Association, Central Jersey Safe Energy Coalition, Food & Water Watch, New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Education Fund, and Sierra Club for their work on this legal challenge — and to the countless advocates, community leaders and residents across New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania who have fought this project alongside us for years.
This victory belongs to all of you who kept showing up. To everyone who submitted comments, attended meetings, contacted decision-makers, shared information and helped keep attention on this project: thank you.
State lines may divide us on a map, but our air, water and communities are interconnected. Decisions about fossil fuel infrastructure in one place can have consequences far beyond it. This win is a powerful reminder of what can happen when communities across our region stand together to demand a cleaner, healthier future.
The fight is not over. The next move is now in the hands of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and we’ll be watching closely to see what happens next.
For now, this is a significant, hard-earned win worth celebrating.
