Expanding charging access in apartment buildings, urban neighborhoods, and public spaces is especially important to ensure all communities can benefit.
Lawmakers should also support technologies that help EVs and batteries strengthen the grid. Vehicle-to-grid programs, rooftop solar, battery storage, and virtual power plants can reduce peak electricity demand, lower energy costs, and improve resilience during outages. These tools can help replace the need for expensive and polluting gas peaker plants that operate only during periods of high demand.
At the same time, New Jersey should carefully evaluate continued investments in fossil fuel infrastructure. Projects such as the proposed Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline would expand natural gas capacity at a time when cleaner alternatives are becoming more affordable and effective. Critics argue that such projects lock ratepayers into decades of fossil fuel dependence while diverting resources from renewable energy and grid modernization.
The state’s energy future should focus on accelerating investments in renewable energy, battery storage, energy efficiency, and grid upgrades. These technologies can improve reliability while reducing pollution and long-term costs.
The transition to clean energy is already underway. The question is whether public policy will help speed that transition or continue supporting infrastructure that prolongs dependence on fossil fuels.
