On May 28, legislators, environmental advocates and community leaders gathered outside the New Jersey Statehouse in Trenton to rally for stronger protections against rising energy costs tied to the rapid growth of power-intensive data centers. Organized by the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters, the event called on lawmakers to hold major energy users accountable while advancing investments in clean energy and grid modernization to protect ratepayers.
Speakers included representatives from Vote Solar, Climate Revolution Action Network (CRAN), New Jersey Progressive Equitable Energy Coalition (NJPEEC), Isles, Rethink Energy NJ and the New Jersey Conservation Foundation, alongside state lawmakers including Assembly members Robert Karabinchak, Dave Bailey and Balvir Singh, and Senators Bob Smith and Raj Mukherji. Advocates warned that without action, expanding data center demand could drive electricity prices even higher for working families already facing inflation pressures.
Following the rally, attendees entered the Statehouse for lobbying meetings with legislators and staff to push for ratepayer protection measures and clean energy legislation aimed at ensuring an affordable and sustainable energy future for New Jersey residents.
People can support the effort by sending a letter urging legislators to vote YES on S680 and A796/S731, two bills designed to prevent the costs of powering massive energy-intensive facilities from being shifted onto ratepayers.
